Dengue Fever – Cause, Symptoms, Prevention & Remedy

Dengue Fever : Cause, Symptoms, Prevention, and Remedy – RJH clinic, pharma & lab

Dengue fever, a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, is a major public health concern in many tropical and subtropical regions, including India. The disease is caused by one of four related viruses, and is transmitted to humans by the Aedes mosquito. This mosquito is a day biter and breeds in clean water like AC and refrigerator water, water stored in open tanks and sumps and water in open pot holes after rain.

Symptoms of dengue fever can range from mild to severe, and may include fever, headache, joint pain, and rash. In severe cases, dengue fever can progress to dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can be life-threatening.

Prevention of dengue fever primarily involves mosquito control measures, such as eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed and using mosquito repellents.

There is currently no specific cure for dengue fever, so treatment focuses on managing the symptoms. Pain relievers, such as acetaminophen(Paracetamol), are often used to alleviate fever and joint pain. One has to focus on maintaining proper hydration with oral fluids and/or intravenous fluid infusion. It is very important to boast immune system with adequate rest. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary to provide intravenous fluids and other supportive care (like platelet transfusion).

Investigations/Lab tests: Doctor may suggest you to do CBC (complete blood count) which also tells us PCV (packed cell volume)/hematocrit value which is percentage of volume of cells to whole blood and platelet count in the beginning of fever and Dengue test (if he/she suspects Dengue infection). Then it is important to monitor the platelet count and PCV periodically based on the severity of the disease. Your doctor may recommend other tests if he suspects any other comorbidities

It is important to seek medical attention promptly if you suspect that you may have dengue fever, particularly if you live in or have recently traveled to an area where the disease is endemic. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and improve outcomes.
